History

Famous novelist Tom Robbins once wrote about Klosters, stating “Discreet luxury yes, pomposity just for show, no”, it warns; here “understatement is written in capital letters”. It’s this notion of ‘understated luxury’ that gives Klosters its own unique charm.

Klosters uniquely combines the epitome of the sophisticated mountain resort with the romantic unspoilt Swiss village. Famous for hosting royalty and only a short trip from neighbouring Davos; this exlusive and rustic village nestles in the still rural area of Graubunden.

The first hotels in neighbouring Davos, the Hotel Strela and Kessler’s Kulm Hotel, were built in 1854 and 1864 respectively. After the first official tourists made their way to recuperate in the mountains shortly after.

The fun continued with the introduction of toboggans and the birth of the skeleton-bob some years later. Fast forward to 1934 and the world’s first T-Bar lift was proudly constructed. Over the next sixty years the region enjoyed significant growth and in 2008 the Davos and Klosters tourist offices officially merged.
